Why Are Old Patterns Returning in 2026? Reflections on the Energy and Symbolism of the Number 10

Have you noticed old patterns returning in 2026? People you thought you'd never see again suddenly appearing; parts of trauma you had worked through being triggered; memories of places and spaces you believed were long gone still present; or dreams pulling you back into chapters you had forgotten?

Over the course of this year I have noticed this pattern not only coming up in my own personal life, but also in conversations with clients, friends and many others. I started to pay close attention to what was happening, not only in the daytime, but also in my dreams because that is where I was sensing it the most.

Boyfriends coming in dreams, relationships I had long left behind, some didn’t even consummate into relationships. People I had completely forgotten about! Suddenly bumping into my first ever boyfriend in the street, who still had an emotional hold on me (linked to trauma) which I have been working to release for a few years after it came to my awareness.

Places of work that I have moved on from coming back through dreams, intertwined with one another, leaving me in reflection as I was writing the dreams in my journal.

The most powerful one was finding myself falling back into a pattern of behaviour that, I know, is not part of my true essence and belongs to an old way of living. The good about this experience is that it made me shut my door on that (literally also – my door latch locked from the inside and I could not get in my house) and reinforce my boundaries.

Around me, I kept hearing stories of people finding themselves in very similar situations. No one seemed to consciously understand the purpose of what was happening. However, deep down, something was certainly clicking; an awareness of truth that runs within.

I knew the Tower (a bit of Tarot analogy) has been crumbling for a couple of years now; foundations being rebuilt, but I had not noticed to what extent we were collectively as well being affected and pushed by these energies that circle around us unseen. Energies that are deeply felt as they hold space for change, towards growth and betterment.

I sat in deep reflection and contemplation with this for quite some time, as I wondered what it was that was pushing so strongly. We could all feel it. We were all in alignment with what was coming through.

My reflection was  guiding me to the feeling of closing loops, cycles, saying one last goodbye before moving on, doors fully closing so new ones can open. Something certainly more aligned with our truth. Freedom and self-sovereignty!

Then came the aha moment! It is the energy of this year, not reduced to a 1, but more with the vibration of the 10. We cannot start birthing or manifesting from alignment, from truth, until we end what has been dragging us down, away from our true essence, for such a long time.

As I continued reflecting, another pattern quietly emerged. My attention kept being drawn back to 2017 and 2008, both years that also reduce to the number 10 in numerology. The connection wasn't intellectual at first; it came through small synchronicities. One day I found a 5p coin from 2008 lying on the floor. Another day I came across a notebook from 2017 that I hadn't opened in years. Reading through it, I realised that 2008 marked the beginning of a significant chapter in my life, while 2017 marked its completion. Looking back through my 2017 journal, I was reminded that, later that year, I found a job that felt much more aligned with what I had been consciously seeking. Although, in hindsight, two years later I realised it was no longer the right fit, it was still an important part of the path that led me where I am today. It was also during that period that I immersed myself more deeply in my spiritual journey and eventually began Reiki. Those moments made me wonder whether I was being invited to reflect on experiences whose teachings I had not yet fully integrated.

So, I started digging deeper. I wanted to explore what ancient scholars, mystical and esoteric schools, religions and civilisations had to say about the symbolism of the number 10. This is what stood out for me. As always, I encourage you to do your own inner and outer research; it helps build discernment.

As a mathematician, I have always known that zero is an extraordinary number. Our computers would not function without the relationship between zero and one through binary code, which made me reflect more deeply on the power of this combination. The Pythagoreans regarded the number 10 as representing cosmic perfection through the Tetractys, embodying unity, duality, harmony and completion.

What fascinated me most, however, was how consistently the number 10 appears across ancient civilisations, mystical traditions and religions. Although each tradition expresses it differently, many associate it with completion, divine order, transition and wholeness. Whether through the Ten Commandments in Judaism and Christianity, the Ten Sephirot in Kabbalah, the Ten Paramitas in Buddhism or Vishnu's ten avatars in Hinduism, the symbolism repeatedly points towards the completion of one cycle before the beginning of another. Chinese cosmology also associates the number 10 with completeness through the Ten Heavenly Stems, while many modern Hermetic interpretations view 10 as the union of spirit (1) and potential (0). Modern numerology, meanwhile, reduces 10 to a 1, symbolising new beginnings, yet still regards the number as both an ending and a beginning at the same time.

Summarising, it turns out that the number 10 has deep symbology: completion, cosmic order, totality, perfection, transition and divine structure.

I would say that, depending on where you are in your life, many of us are intuitively sensing the energetic vibration of this year, linked to its symbolism; whilst others are moving fully attuned to the energy without consciously recognising it.

Tuning back into the energy of the number 10 in relation to its symbolism and what I have noticed that has been resurfacing now for some, it is not necessarily a sign that we are moving backwards or going back to square one. Instead, I feel it is an invitation to complete what still remains unfinished or in our subconscious waiting to be acknowledged. I normally call this energetic debris. We are revisiting these experiences not because we have failed to work through them, but because another part of it is ready to be seen, released and integrated.

I have also noticed that what others are faced with is not asking to be integrated; the healing work has already been done. It simply offers the opportunity to witness how we have outgrown and reconnected to our true selves as a consequence of the experience. It may be a relationship, workplace or period of life we once idealised that we realise no longer holds the same emotional charge. By being faced with it, we realise we have genuinely moved on. The attachment has dissolved, the cycle has completed and we finally remember we are already living in alignment, strengthening the foundation from which new beginnings and true manifestation emerge.

These strong patterns that I have witnessed so far this year, whilst deeply individual, feel like part of a collective death-rebirth cycle. Many people seem to be encountering old stories one final time; not to relive them, but to bring them to completion and move on. Connecting this to the way some numerologists view the number 10 – endings and beginnings at the same time.

So, to me this energy has been inviting us on an individual and collective level to return to wholeness (healing); letting go and integrating whatever is left of our past into our present, so that we can move into alignment and start to materialise our potential (manifestation) and create a new beginning built on cleared foundations.

If you feel the energetic pull of this number 10, I believe you will find value in paying attention to what is asking for your awareness now. Not asking yourself "Why is this happening again?" but rather, "What is this experience inviting me to finally understand, accept, release or integrate so I can birth anew?"

A little guidance from me, if you are experiencing old unwanted patterns resurfacing, trauma being triggered, or people and places returning unexpectedly, is that these experiences are often connected to a feeling or emotion that still lives within you, even if the memory itself has become faint. Take a few minutes for yourself in the morning or evening, whenever it is easier for you to find a moment of peace and solitude, and sit with the feeling that arises as you remember. Do not engage in the story line that your mind will tell you about you, the person, place or space; just sit with the feeling and allow it to move through you. Write it down, sing it out, cry it out, scream it out of you; whatever it takes, the invitation is to let it go, so that you can close the cycle that will create space for a new, more aligned one to begin.

If you struggle with feeling, you could also ask yourself the following questions:

Work: Who am I professionally now, compared with who I was back in…. or when I worked at…..?

Relationships: Who am I now, compared with the woman when I was with …..?

Boundaries: What do I no longer tolerate; in work, in love and in how I treat myself?

YOU: How do I feel about myself today versus back then?

Of course, none of this means that the number 10 itself is causing these experiences. I am simply offering my reflections based on the symbolism and energetic pull I have personally been feeling throughout this year. My intention is only to act as a bridge to pique your curiosity, inviting you to contemplate and reflect, never replacing your own discernment.

If none of this resonates, let it go!

With love always,

Zoly
